UNITED Party for National Development (UPND) president Hakainde Hichilema has reiterated that he won the January 20, 2015 presidential election but was robbed by the Electoral Commission of Zambia’s incorrect counting of votes.
Mr. Hichilema however said the UPND would form government next year because the people of Zambia have lost confidence and trust in the Patriotic Front (PF) administration.
“I will win next year and form government. UPND is the most growing political party in Zambia and you can see it by yourself. We shall form Government and bring change to the livelihood of the people of Zambia,” he said.
He said this when he featured on Millennium radio’s “The Interview” programme yesterday.
Mr. Hichilema said the UPND was the only strong opposition political party that has shown leadership and popularity.
He said since 2011 general elections, the UPND had shown great growth and popularity looking at the way it has faired.
“I don’t want to sound strange but I have to be honest; the UPND is the strongest opposition political party in the country. Look at our performance in 2011 going into the January presidential by-election. We lost by about one percent. What does that tell you? The people of Zambia are appreciating the UPND and its policies,” he said.
Mr. Hichilema invited all opposition political parties to join hands with the UPND and dislodge the PF Government next year.
Mr. Hichilema said Zesco was in a crisis and that the PF government had no capacity to resolve the problem the electricity supply company was facing.
He said the only way forward was to kick out the PF from government and bring in a new team which would employ people on merit and not on political support basis.
“Let us spend time on issues affecting our people; the ZESCO issue is a crisis and a serious one which will take a long time to resolve. This crisis is real and it will take a longer period and what is sad is that the Government of the PF has no capacity to deal with it. They are lying that the load shedding and black out the country is facing is as a result of low water levels in our rivers and dams. The PF don’t realize that the hydro-electric dams are made in such a way that they have gate valves which they opened just a few months ago,” Mr. Hichilema said.
He said Zesco’s crisis has caused damage to household goods and most affected were poor people, adding that as a result of unplanned load shedding many business houses were closing and cutting on the number of employees because they could not produce.
The vocal opposition leader urged the PF government to stop politicizing the crisis at Zesco as it has the capacity to destroy the country’s economy because Government was losing huge sums of money in tax and revenue.
He said if the load shedding crisis was not addressed more people including miners would lose jobs.
And Mr. Hichilema has invited all the opposition political parties to join the UPND in the quest to form Government next year.
Mr. Hichilema said the UPND was ready to work with other opposition political leaders if the PF was to be removed from Government.
“We are ready to work with everyone. We want to work with all political parties. Let them come and work with us in order to remove the PF from Government,” said Mr. Hichilema.
