FORMER Zambia football team coach Patrick Phiri has urged Chipolopolo to beat Guinea Bissau tomorrow to gain confidence for the next 2017 Gabon African Cup of Nations qualifiers.
The Chipolopolo tomorrow begin their campaign for the AfCON qualifiers against unkown Guinea Bissau at Levy Mwanawasa Stadium in Ndola.
Phiri told the Daily Nation that it was important for the Chipolopolo to get maximum points in the first game to stay strong for the next challenge.
“It is always important to win the first game for confidence’s sake and points. In most circumstances it becomes a challenge to recover from a first loss. The team should endeavour to pick maximum points in every match,” he said.
He said he was confident that Zambia will emerge victorious though it will be a tough match.
“It is always difficult to play an opponent that you are not familiar with. I am confident that the coaches have already analysed Bissau’s technical and tactical approach. We have fantastic players that can deliver us victory,” he said.
Phiri said it was unfortunate that striker Evans Kangwa and defender Stophila Sunzu will not be part of the team but That should not deter the team from winning.
Meanwhile, Zambia Soccer Fans Association chairperson Peter Makembo appealed to the fans to come in large numbers to give the team support.
Makembo said Bissau was not a threat especially that the Chipolopolo had prepared adequately for the match.
“My team is ready to drum up support for the boys. We are confident Zambia will carry the day. The boys are playing at home and deserve the best support, “he said.
