Chipolopolo under fire

SOCCER fans have described the failure by the Chipolopolo to defend the Council of Southern Africa Association (COSAFA) Castle Senior Challenge Cup as an extremely embarrassing affair.

Chipolopolo Soccer Fans Association (CSFA) president Yotham Mwanza said it was extremely embarrassing for a soccer powerhouse like Zambia to be ejected at the first hurdle.

“What makes the loss embarrassing is the fact that Zambia had included professionals in the team but still went ahead to lose to Namibia. We had the best team at the tournament and didn’t deserve to play in the Plate with South Africa,

“This is a wake-up call for Honour Janza and the Football Association of Zambia executive committee,’’ He said.

He appealed to FAZ to beef up the technical bench by employing senior local coaches that would help Janza drive the team to victory.

And reacting to the sacking of Nkana FC coach Beston Chambeshi,   Mwanza said coaches were sometime were used as scapegoats by executive committees when football clubs fail to perform. Mwanza said that he understood every club employed a coach to perform but executive committees should exercise patience with coaches.

“We have seen coaches being relieved of their jobs this season with the latest being Beston Chambeshi of Nkana FC. If results are not coming, it becomes a questionable thing to keep a coach. But patience should be applied. For instance it was too early for NAPSA Stars to sack Hector Chilombo.

“It’s unfortunate that coaches are used as scapegoats. Sometimes the reason behind the team’s poor performance could be lack of quality players or the players remuneration not being enough. The executive committee should analyse before arriving at such a decision,’’ he said.

He advised coaches that have been relieved of their duties not to lose hope but aim higher.
