THE MMD in Mufulira district has demanded for a convention to elect a new leadership which will revive the former ruling party and take it to greater heights.
MMD Mufulira district secretary Lewis Kunda said the party in the district had lost confidence in the leadership because the party continued to nose-dive.
Mr Kunda said in an interview in Mufulira yesterday that the leadership of three constituencies, Kankoyo, Mufulira Central and Kantanshi and the district executive committee indicated that they had lost confidence in the leadership.
“When we had a meeting on Tuesday with all the three constituencies namely Kankoyo, Mufulira Central and Mufulira Central, we all agreed that Dr Mumba has failed to provide leadership and direction in the former ruling party.
“It is really shameful and embarrassing that from the time he took over the MMD leadership, the former ruling party started nose-diving. He has been quiet and the party is almost becoming non-existent. As Mufulira district, we are demanding that next year the party holds a convention to elect a new leadership that will revive the former ruling party,” Mr Kunda said.
He urged other district executive committees of the MMD to also pass a vote of no confidence in the leadership of Dr Mumba.
Mr Kunda said under Dr Mumba, the MMD had always been losing grip even in its strongholds and its staunch members were no longer proud of their party.
“Dr Mumba’s coming to the MMD has not brought any good to the former ruling party because he had no interest in the former ruling party. So we are urging other districts on the Copperbelt to denounce Dr Mumba because he has not provided direction in the party.
“Even after losing the 2011 elections, MMD was still strong, but when Dr Mumba took over, things started getting worse. We can’t continue like this; Dr Mumba should go,” Mr Kunda said.
