UNITED Party for National Development (UPND) president Hakainde Hichilema has no respect for his colleagues in other political parties, opposition Forum for Democracy and Development (FDD) president Edith Nawakwi has charged.
Ms Nawakwi said Mr Hichilema’s characterisation of the respect she extended to President Lungu during the Seventh Day Adventist Church service brought to light his deep-rooted belief that he was better than all the 14 million Zambians.
This is according to a letter dated May 5, 2015 Ms Nawakwi has written to Mr Hichilema. Ms Nawakwi expressed displeasure and shock at the statement which was issued by UPND office on 27th April, 2015 in which Mr Hichilema alleged that President Edgar Lungu treated Ms Nawakwi like a maid servant during the Seventh Day Adventist Church service at Heroes Stadium on April 25th, 2015.
Mr Nawakwi said she was in disbelief that a person such as Mr Hichilema who was vying for the highest office in the land could look down upon a section of the society based on their profession.
“Your statement clearly demonstrates that you have no regard for certain people’s occupation,” the letter reads.
“Mr. President, the derogatory manner in which you referred to both the Republican President, H.E Edgar Lungu and I as simply “EDGAR” and “EDITH”, demonstrates your lack of respect for colleagues and an outright disregard for the important position of the profession of maid servants,” read the letter
Ms Nawakwi said she had however, noted with interest that in November 2014, Mr Hichilema accorded the then Patriotic Front (PF) secretary general now Republican President Mr Lungu similar courtesy which he was now putting into question.
She however said if Mr Hichilema was to be the President of the Republic of Zambia, she would still accord him the due courtesy as per Zambian and Africa tradition.
Last month, UPND issued a statement in which it stated that; “If President Lungu is really as humble as people in PF claim, Edgar would have stood up when Edith approached to greet him, that is respect.
But he treated Edith like a maid servant who should be subjugated because Edgar has the privilege of being President of Zambia at this moment.”
The statement further read, “We are surprised that the women movements have not said anything against that display of humiliation.”
