SUSPECTED Rainbow Party cadres yesterday verbally abused Lusaka lawyer Makebi Zulu and attempted to smash Zambia National Broadcasting Corporation (ZNBC) video camera after roughing up a journalist who was filming their leader Wynter Kabimba.
Mr Zulu was walking from the car park towards the magistrate court complex when the unruly cadres who looked inebriated approached Mr Zulu and verbally abused him for representing Mr Newton Ng’uni who is one of the witnesses in Mr Kabimba’s contempt case..
Mr Zulu, who is one of the lawyers representing former president Rupiah Banda, did not seem to be bothered with what they were saying and did not even stop to respond to them.
As the cadres were insulting Mr Zulu, ZNBC journalist Hector Simfukwe was filming his (Makebi Zulu) abusers without them noticing him.
The moment Mr Zulu and cadres who kept on accosting him reached where Mr Simfukwe was standing, they switched and vented their anger on the ZNBC cameraman..
“Iwe ni chani uti kopa. Tizachi pwanya chi camera ichi ngati siuziba,” one of cadres said.
They later got hold of the camera and threatened to smash it on the ground, but Mr Simfukwe remained unshaken and dared them.
“Here it is, come and break it,” Mr Simfukwe said stretching his hand holding the camera to the gang of cadres, but they all grew cold feet.
After his ordeal, Mr Simfukwe could not comment but referred all queries to the company secretary.
This is not the first time Rainbow Party cadres have harassed journalists at Lusaka Magistrates Court Complex.
Last week, the same party cadres harassed freelance journalist Chanda Chimba III and he almost lost his video camera after they attempted to grab the gadget from him and break it. Mr Chimba was filming Post Newspaper owner Fred M’membe as emerged from the courtroom.
The cadres wanted Mr Chimba to stop taking a video of Mr M’membe as he walked along the corridors of the court.
When Mr Chanda did not stop filming Mr M’membe whispered and instructed some suspected Rainbow Party cadres to grab his camera and break it.
