UPND’s hate for former president Rupiah Banda will cost them next year’s election because the people of Eastern Province are unhappy with the way the opposition is attacking and insulting the former Head of State, former MMD Lusaka Province chairman Watson Mtonga has said.
In an interview with the Daily Nation, Mr. Mtonga said the attacks on former president Banda were out of hate the UPND have for the former Head of State for refusing to support them in the 20th January, 2015 Presidential election which was won by President Edgar Lungu.
He said people in Eastern Province felt insulted and undermined by the UPND whose leadership was focused on fighting Mr Banda instead of offering solutions for the future of the nation and the benefits of the people.
“I am deeply offended by the position UPND has taken to disgrace former president Rupiah Banda in the manner they are doing their politics. UPND has shown lack of unity and the promotion of respect to the office of the President and individuals that hold the office of the President by insulting them every day. They are practicing cheap politics ,” Mr. Mtonga said.
He said it was not the fault of Mr Banda that the UPND lost the election, adding that the personal hate they have for him would not help them to win next year’s election.
“Eastern Province as a block will teach UPND a lesson in the forthcoming parliamentary by-election in Petauke and Malambo because of these insults against the old man. People in Eastern Province are annoyed and unhappy with the UPND because they have continued insulting Mr Banda. Kids such as Cornelius Mweetwa and Likando Mufalali cannot continue to insult Mr. Banda in that fashion,” said Mr. Mtonga. He said the UPND had de-campaigned itself enough in the province, adding that even the little support they received in the January election would not be achieved next year. Mr. Mtonga urged UPND to focus on selling the party manifesto rather than fighting Mr. Banda who was not in the presidential race anymore.
“Let them focus on building bridges for 2016 general elections because with their continued attack on RB, votes will elude them in Eastern Province. RB has a huge following here and people still believe in him so fighting him is like fighting individual households in the province, it is like fighting chiefdoms, it’s like fighting me here,” said Mr. Mtonga.
He warned that Eastern Province will not give a vote to a political party which continues insulting former Head of State and Presidents now because leadership was God given.
