All we need is motivation from the 2012 AfCON win
SKIPPER Rainford Kalaba has advised his chipolopolo teammates to take motivation from the 2012 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) conquest in Gabon to target the 2017 qualifiers.
Zambia has been drawn in Group E with Kenya, Congo-Brazzaville and Guinea Bissau to battle it out for the Gabon AfCON finals.
Kalaba said Gabon will not be a strange place for the team and will definitely have support of the people there.
“We lifted the AfCON Cup from there and I am sure we can do it again. We should however be mindful that our opponents are potential qualifiers and we should therefore take each game seriously,
“Zambia maybe better ranked but we should never underrate anyone in soccer these days’, he said. He said the team should prepare adequately for the qualifiers and ensure it qualified to Gabon.
“The 2017 AfCON will help the team prepare for the 2018 World Cup qualifiers billed for Russia. It will be easier to have a formidable team for the World Cup and remain in shape, “he said.
Kalaba emphasized that the primary goal of the team was to qualify for the World Cup and was confident that Zambia will make a debu at the Moscow tournamentt.
“We have been to the AfCON several times but now the team needs to feature at the World Cup. I am sure the team is capable of playing at the World Cup”, he said.
Zambia will kick off the Gabon 2017 Africa Cup of Nations qualifier with a home fixture against Guinea Bissau in June.
The qualifiers will run through to September next year with the 13 group winners qualifying for the tournament where they will be joined by hosts Gabon and the two best losers in the qualifiers.
