“I HAVE not defected to the Patriotic Front as suggested by some individuals”, Education Minister Michael Kaingu has said.
Clearing the air over his alleged crossing to the PF last week when he was on a campaign trial with President Edgar Lungu, Dr. Kaingu wondered how a senior party official of his standing would defect at this moment.
“How can a big man like myself defect? I am still MMD. I have been on the entourage of President Lungu and Vice-President Inonge Wina,” said Dr. Kaingu.
And opposition MMD spokesperson Rapahel Nakachinda said that the former ruling party was verifying Dr. Kaingu’s statement whether it was true that he had announced his defection to the Patriotic Front.
In an interview yesterday with the Daily Nation Mr. Nakachinda said the party was still studying Dr. Kaingu’s statement while he was on a campaign trail in Northern Province with President Lungu.
He said the party was disappointed with Dr. Kaingu’s statement that he had defected to the ruling PF when his other colleagues were given jobs by President Lungu but still remained committed to the MMD.
“We feel he is failing to manage his appointment as Cabinent minister. But what we want to do is to wait and see if it is true that he has defected to the PF.
We are doing the verification as you are talking to me,” said Mr. Nakachinda.
Mr. Nakachinda observed that it was unfortunate that Dr. Kaingu as one of the senior MMD members was doing things in a manner that hinged on his credibility.
He said the party was following closely the unfolding events with respect to Dr. Kaingu’s alleged statements.
“For now we cannot say he is our member or not, what we are waiting for is the official confirmation that he has defected or he is still our member. For now it is confusing,” said Mr. Nakachinda.
