UPND president Hakainde Hichilema should apologise to his cadres who were beaten up in 2012 by Police for opposing the appointment of Mutembo Nchito as Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP), says Patriotic Front media and publicity committee vice chairperson Sunday Chanda.
He said Zambians were able to see that Mr Hichilema was a lost cause on account of his ‘‘inconsistencies and flip-flopping ‘‘over Mr Nchito’s suspension.
Mr Hichilema has criticised the suspension of Mr Nchito, accusing Government of having a hidden agenda.
Mr Chanda said Mr Hichilema and all UPND MPs in Parliament refused to ratify Mutembo Nchito, adding that not even Douglas Siakalima stood with Mr Nchito until today.
“We wonder what is going through the minds of the UPND MPs who believed they were taking a principled decision on the suspended DPP,” he said.
Mr Chanda wondered why today the UPND had fallen in love with Mr Nchito, a man they disparaged not long ago.
“If the nolle is the reason, why Mr Hichilema finds nothing wrong in supporting Mr Nchito, then this is immoral.
Those with the gift of knowledge within UPND must wake up to the reality that their party leader is moved by expediency and not principle. Today UPND is enjoying coverage by the Post Newspaper when not long ago they issued strong statements against the media house,” he said.
“Does HH recall that on October 24, 2013, UPND accused Fred Mmembe and Kabimba of using tribalism to push their agendas? Does HH recall the Post Newspaper editorial of October 16, 2011 entitled ” We don’t hate HH, we hate his TRIBAL politics” and this was after the UPND threw all sorts of unprintables on the Post,” he said.
Mr Chanda said in that editorial the Post newspaper pointed out that; ” Who said to him that he cannot be President because he is Tonga? Maybe the problem that he has is his militant tribalism and unless he deals with it, he is of very little use to our national politics. If anything, he is a danger. Hakainde is the only politician that we think of in our country whose entry into politics was heralded by a tribal trumpet.”
He said the same editorial noted; ” Those who came to insult us for telling Hakainde that he was running a bantustan party should stop and reflect on what we are saying.
Hakainde has hijacked UPND and made sure that only his opinion goes. You cannot be a national leader without listening to contrary views”.
Mr Chanda reminded Mr Hichilema to recall that on March 1, 2011, he personally described Kabimba as petty-minded and his deputy secretary general Kuchunga Simuusamba called Kabimba a ‘‘shameless useful idiot,’’ adding that today, according to HH and his UPND, Kabimba was a good man.
Mr Chanda accused Mr Hichilema of having turned his back on UPND members and those who endorsed his January 20 15 candidature.
He said that was why people who know Mr Hichilema well such as Paul Moonga, who comes from the same village with him, decided to ditch the UPND.
Mr Chanda said there were still many more to ditch UPND because they were dealing with a man who could not be steered in the right direction.
