UPND hits back at MMD

The MMD should concentrate on rebuilding its image as it has lost a lot of members since its defeat to the Patriotic Front (PF) in the 2011 general elections, former UPND special assistant to the party President, Edward Mumbi has said.

He said those joining the UPND were doing so from the point of view of an alliance adding that the party has never forced people to join it.

Mr Mumbi was reacting to MMD spokesperson Raphael Nakachinda who alleged that UPND was undemocratic and was trying to swallow other political parties in the opposition.

“The UPND is a very democratic party contrary to assertions by Mr Nakachinda. We have never forced people to join us but they are simply doing it from an alliance point of view and if anything the MMD must consider working on rebuilding their party which has lost a considerable membership since losing elections to the PF in 2011,” he said.

Mr Mumbi said the UPND National Executive Committee had never at any point sat down to advise their president Hakainde Hichilema must not contest the 2016 elections.

He accused the MMD under the leadership of Mr Nevers Mumba of being undemocratic  for failure to allow former president Rupiah Banda to contest the 2015 Presidential by elections despite being endorsed by the National Executive Committee (NEC) of the party.

Mr Mumbi said it was clear that Mr Nakachinda and party president Nevers Mumba had failed to put their own house in order hence resolving to attacking fellow opposition parties.

“The NEC of their party had given former president Rupiah Banda a mandate to lead them during the 2015 presidential by elections but Mr Mumba sought court intervention knowing very well that he had little support within the party ranks,” he said.

Mr Mumbi said the UPND had opened doors for those wanting to join to do so because the party believes in democracy.

Mr Nakachinda told the Daily Nation in an interview yesterday that the UPND should stop overrating itself thinking that they will form the next government in 2016.

“It will be difficult for UPND to form Government because the party is undemocratic,” Mr Nakachinda said.
