A 29-year-old man who is a deacon has dragged his wife to court in Lusaka for divorce on allegation that she was attempting to commit suicide.
This is in a case in which Abby Zulu of Lilanda compound has sued his wife, Alidah Zulu, 22, of Chazanga compound for divorce.
The two got married in 2009 and have a child.
Zulu told Senior Court Magistrate Petronella Kalyelye sitting with Magistrate Lewis Mumba at Matero Local Court that when they differ Alidah tells him that she will commit suicide or kill her child from her previous marriage or burn the house.
He explained that he got scared because at first she drunk poison to take her life.
Zulu added that when they differ Alidah’s mother interferes in their marriage because she normally visited their home to shout at him and also goes to shout at his parents.
“She went to church with her mother without telling me and they demanded that I am excommunicated. When we separated on November 2, 2014 Alidah’s mother told people who took her to her mother that I am poor I can’t keep her and that Alidah will get married to a doctor,” he said.
In defence, Alidah said they normally differed over her child from her previous marriage.
Alidah said Zulu was always boasting he was better than other men who could not keep a child of another man.
She said since she was taken to her parents, Zulu stopped maintaining her.
Alidah added that she sued Zulu for reconciliation but he refused to reconcile.
In submission, Zulu said that he wanted to divorce Alidah because she threatens to commit suicide.
Alidah said she did not want a divorce as she wanted to live with Zulu.
Passing judgment, Magistrate Kalyelye said that even if Alidah wants Zulu it cannot work because he has refused to reconcile.
She granted the couple divorce ordering Zulu to compensate Alidah K5000 with initial payment of K500 followed by monthly instalments of K250 and to be paying child maintenance fee of K300 per month.
