FORMER commissioner of the Human Rights Commission (HRC) Lavu Mulimba has died and the commission expressed sadness over his death.

HRC Director Florence Chibwesha said in a statement that Mr.  Mulimba who was former Minister of labour social development and culture in UNIP government provided guidance and made great contribution to the work of the commission in its formative stage.

Ms. Chibwesha described Mr. Mulimba as a true champion of human rights and a great inspiration to the commission.

She said Mr. Mulimba courageously led the commission in fulfilling its mandate of promoting and protecting fundamental freedoms and human rights of all people in the country.

Ms Chibwesha said the immense contribution of the late Mr. Mulimba to HRC’s development and provision of human rights services would forever be remembered. The late Mr. Mulimba was one of the first distinguished Zambians appointed to serve as commissioners for the Human Rights Commission in April 1997 when the institution was established.
