A 45-year-old man in Lusaka has denied infecting his wife with sexual transmitted disease and said she could have been bewitched.
Watson Mbewe of Linda compound was testifying in a case in which his wife, Tapiwa Chimeza,27, sued him for divorce.
However, Mbewe said that he still loves his wife, Chimeza.
The two got married in 2001 and they have three children.
Chimeza told Senior Court Magistrate Sarah Nyendwa sitting with Magistrate Mubukwanu Matakala at Chawama Local Court that all was well in marriage until 2003 when people told her he was frequenting a woman at a nearby bar.
“When I followed the woman she hit me with a bottle and Mbewe ran to Kanyama where he stayed for sometime but we later reconciled.
She explained that later Mbewe started drinking beer and told her that she can not stop him.
Chimeza explained that sometimes Mbewe was locked her out and she was forced to sleep at a nearby orphanage.
Mbewe while drunk urinated on a sofa and sometimes in a dish. “Recently Mbewe was away from from for four and he infected me with Gonorrhoea I even have a medical report”, said Chimeza.
In cross-examination, Chimeza said that it is Mbewe who infected her with STD because she never slept with any other man.
Asked by the court if she was surprised to be infected with STD Chimeza said that she couldn’t get surprised because she knew her husband as a womanizer.
In defence, Mbewe said that the problems started last year when he started drinking beer.
He explained that Chimeza was jealousy woman but he understands all that because she loves him.
Mbewe said that at one time he found a strange number in Chimeza’s phone and that when he called it a man shouted him down.
” One day her friend came home and when she saw me she just left and I followed her and found a man in a Pajero who drove off.
Chimeza is jealousy and I don’t know where the STD came from, ” said Mbewe.
Asked by Chimeza if he did not infect her with STD, Mbewe denied and said that may be she was bewitched because they have not been making love for some time.
In submission, Chimeza said that she wanted to divorce Mbewe because he may now infect her with HIV but Mbewe insisted he still loves Chimeza.
Passing judgment, Magistrate Nyendwa said that there was excessive drinking and desertion in the couple’s marriage.
She granted the couple divorce ordering Mbewe to compensate Chimeza K12,000 with initial payment of K1000 followed by monthly installments of K600 and to be paying child maintenance fee of K350 per month.
