THE scheme to hound out Patriotic Front (PF) Secretary General Davis Chama is being championed by Rainbow Party sympathisers who are targeting to weaken party and Republican President Edgar Lungu, ahead of next year’s general elections, Lusaka District PF district women’s chairlady Margret Mumba has charged.
Ms Mumba said the PF’s women’s league in Lusaka is set to protest against the people behind the scheme to remove Mr Chama from the party position.
“The scheme to hound out Mr. Chama is a dead project because all the people behind it want to see the PF swallowed by the Rainbow Party. Those against Mr. Chama were against President Lungu also,” Ms Mumba said.
And Munali youth chairman Daniel Miyambo said the party leadership was aware of the maneuvers by some PF members to push out Mr. Chama.
Mr. Miyambo said the people behind the anti-Chama project would not succeed because the PF members at the grassroots were happy with his leadership.
“They are saying Mr. Chama is not working and he is failing to mobilise the party. How will he do all that if they have usurped the running of the party secretariat? I want to remind them that Mr. Chama was appointed by President Lungu and it is only President Edgar Lungu who has the power and authority to remove him from that office,” he said. Mr Miyambo said the scheme was not targeted at Mr. Chama but at President Lungu whom they wanted weakened ahead of the 2016 general elections.
“This scheme is not Mr. Chama’s battle but targeted at President Lungu. These chaps are working with the Rainbow Party to weaken the PF by 2016. They are not happy with the party’s decision to work with other opposition political parties,” he said.
Mr. Miyambo said those fighting Mr. Chama were not interested in helping the party grow and prepare for the 2016 general elections.
“There are so many projects we have embarked on as a party. We are now renovating of the new party secretariat along Lumumba road. This secretariat will be the house of the PF and that is where all party functionaries will operate from and not in individual offices as the case is now. This is the initiative of Mr. Chama,” he said.
Mr. Miyambo said the PF did not have time to start fighting, adding that the only time left was to seriously mobilise the people of Zambia to rally behind President Lungu.
And former PF Lusaka district and publicity chairman Wellington Musonda said plans by some PF members to oust Mr Chama would not work because he was appointed by the President who is the only one with power to fire him.
And Mr Musonda argued that genuine PFront members would never go against the decision of President Lungu to have appointed Mr Chama as the party chief.
Mr Musonda cautioned the PF members to be careful with Rainbow Party schemes to destabilize the ruling party.
“Mr Chama knows the grassroots of the party and that is why some members are not comfortable with him, and we are very much aware that they are people who want to see the party failing, but that will not be allowed,” he said.
Mr Musonda claimed that it was clear that those who were opposed to the President’s choice were the same people who wanted him to fail to deliver to the members’ expectation.
