ZESCO United failed to command a first leg lead when at home they drew 1-all to Guinean side, AS Kaloum in the CAF Champions League first round match played at Ndola’s Levy Mwanawasa stadium yesterday
The George ‘Chicken’ Lwandamina coached side conceded a goal in the 58th minute when Kaloum’s Ibrahima Soumah headed in a corner from Mamadou Kouytes.
However, Kaloum’s hope of accumulating three points was crashed in extra time when Maybin Mwaba’s free kick was headed in by Justin Zulu. This was Zulu’s the third goal in the Champions league.
Earlier, Zesco tried to equalize in the 72 minute but the Winston Kalengo goal was disallowed as offside putting the fans in a confused state.
The first half of the game was an level contest, although the Guinean side enjoyed the biggest share of chances on target.
Kaloum dominance on target was felt when Cheick Ballo headed narrowly wide from a 6th minute corner and 20 minutes later Kassongo Kabongo also fired wide off target.
ZESCO nearly broke the deadlock from an unlikely source in the 42nd minute when Kaloum defender Souleymane Badji headed the ball into his own post from a Lazarous Kambole corner bu failed to produce the desired result.
Lwandamina described the match as fair and said the boys have to win the return leg in Mali at all cost.
And Kaloum coach Francois Zahoui said his side put in the best but lost concentration in the dying minutes hence conceding a goal.
Zahoui said he was however happy that they drew in an away game and now have to win in Mali.
Zesco needs a win when they face Kaloum in a return leg set for April 5 in Bamako, Mali to proceed in the tournament.
Power Dynamos will today face Gabonese FC Mounana in the CAF Confederation Cup first round, first leg match.
