MMD president Nevers Mumba says the future of the former ruling party is still bright despite the exodus of senior members to the Patriotic Front (PF).
Dr Mumba said as senior members left the party, they would be replaced by young “fresh blood”.
He said MMD members who felt they had become too big for the party should leave the party so that others could take their positions and participate in the governance process of this country.
Dr Mumba said in an interview that it was untrue that MMD was going backwards just because of some members leaving the party.
“If some people think they are being betrayed by new people, they can go…I think now, we have new blood.
Yes, others are going out but the new blood is coming in,” he said.
Dr Mumba said MMD needs new blood for it to reflect the current demographic status of the country.
The MMD has suffered defections of its senior members to the PF with some being adopted by the ruling party to re-contest their seats on its tickets while other MMD senior members are serving in Government.
The latest to defect to the PF are former Senga Hill member of Parliament Kapembwa Simbao and Michael Katambo who is former lawmaker for Masaiti Constituency.
Dr Mumba said party national secretary Mwansa Mbulakulima would soon issue a comprehensive statement on the decision by Mr Simbao and Mr Katambo to re-contest their seats on the PF
