THE Zambian Government should quickly domesticate the SADC protocol on gender, says Non-Governmental Organization Coordinating Council (NGOCC) Southern Province provincial coordinator Faith Simukoko.
Speaking during the commemoration of the International Womens’ Day in Livingstone yesteday, Ms Simukoko said domesticating the SADC and AU protocol was the only way Zambia could achieve the 50-50 representation of both women and women in decision-making.
Ms. Simukoko said that it was unacceptable that out of 158 members of Parliament, only 20 were women while only five were Cabinet ministers. She has further urged political parties in Zambia to adopt more women as councillors and MPs in 2016. Ms. Simukoko said women should also take up the challenge and apply for adoption in their parties.
She has however acknowledged President Edgar Lungu’s spirit of appointing women in key positions
And Ms Simukoko has bemoaned the rising GBV cases being reported in the province. Over 700 cases have been reported so far this year. She said the scenario was worrying, adding that a lasting solution should be found to curb the vice.
