THE Drug Enforcement Commission (DEC) has arrested a charcoal burner of Ifunda Village, Muchinga Province for unlawful cultivation of fresh cannabis weighing 100.7 kg.
DEC public relations officer Theresa Katongo, who identified the suspect as Chisala Katongo, 41, said he was arrested for trafficking in loose cannabis weighing 1.5kg.
Ms Katongo said in a press statement issued in Lusaka yesterday that the commission had also arrested a couple of the same district for unlawful cultivation of fresh cannabis plants weighing 153kg.
She named the suspects as Davis Chibesakunda, 67, and his wife Idah Chilangu, 50, of Ifunda village in Mpika district.
“The Commission in Muchinga province has also seized 480kg of fresh cannabis plants belonging to Chanda Mulenga of Ifunda village in Mpika District. However, the suspect is on the run and a manhunt has been launched,” she said. In Lusaka, DEC has arrested a businessman and a juvenile, 17, for trafficking and possession in various quantities of Narcotic drugs and Psychotropic substances.
Ms Katongo said a 17-year-old juvernile, of Bauleni Compound was arrested for trafficking in 10 Sachets of Heroin weighing 0.5g and trafficking in 227.3g of loose cannabis and Kashweka Katayi, 45, of Matero township for trafficking in 02 sachets of cocaine weighing 1.1g.
“Others arrested include Andrew Kabaghe, 32, a businessman of Bauleni Compound for being in possession of 0.04g of heroin and 2.9g of loose cannabis and Nicholas Mphande, 23, of Bauleni Compound for being in possession of 07 sachets of heroin weighing 0.3g and 77.1g of loose cannabis,” she said.
In Southern Province, Ms Katongo said DEC arrested two peasant farmers of Monze for trafficking in various quantities of loose cannabis.
Ms Katongo said DEC arrested Leonard Hamaili, 51, of Keemba village trafficking in 11.3kg of cannabis and Chimbe Miyoba, 36 of Miyoba village for trafficking in cannabis weighing 5.2kg.
