THE Kitwe City Council (KCC) has conferred President Edgar Lungu with the Honorary Freeman of the City of Kitwe because he has rendered eminent service to the nation and the city by appointing, for the first time, the first woman Vice-President, Inonge Wina.
The council has also noted that President Lungu was born in Kitwe, did his primary and secondary school education in Kitwe and also served as Secretary on the Kitwe Playing Field (KPF) Board, in which Kitwe has an interest.
Kitwe Town Clerk Bornwell Luanga said the honour was in recognition of the distinguished, noble and tireless contribution and personal sacrifice to the cause of peace and stability for the Zambian nation and humanity, and in honour of the highest esteem in which the President was held by the Kitwe City Council and in appreciation of his ideals which render testimony to all citizenry of the city of Kitwe. Mr Luanga said subject to the provision of the Local Government Act CAP 281 of the laws of Zambia Section 74(1) (a), a city or municipal council may;
“Admit to the status of honorary freeman of the city or municipality, persons of distinction and persons who have rendered eminent service to the city of municipality” “His excellency the President, Edgar Chagwa Lungu has rendered eminent service to the nation and this city by appointing for the first time, the first woman Vice-President.
He said it was against this back ground that the council would like to confer with the Honorary Freeman of the City of Kitwe as provided for in the local government Act CAP 281 of the laws of Zambia and that an investure ceremony be arranged for him through the Minister of Local government and Housing.
