JUSTICE Irene Mambilima deserves the position of Chief Justice because she is sober, credible and has the capacity to deal with the challenges that come with her new position, People’s Party president Mike Mulongoti has said.
Commenting on the ratification of Justice Mambilima by Parliament on Thursday, Mr. Mulongoti said her appointment and the subsequent ratification was long overdue.
“She is a sober lady. She deserves it, she is credible and we can just wish her well. We shall support her in that office,” said Mr. Mulongoti.
He said Zambians must support her in an effort to see meaningful judicial reforms, adding that reforms were not about judges, magistrates, local court magistrates but the entire judicial system.
On Thursday, Parliament unanimously ratified the nomination of the former Electoral Commission of Zambia chairperson as new Chief Justice of Zambia.
Debating the nomination and the subsequent ratification of Justice Mambilima, whose substantive position in the judiciary was Deputy Chief Justice, in Parliament, UPND Monze Central lawmaker Jack Mwiimbu said the judiciary had many challenges to deal with, starting with restoring the lost confidence.
Mr. Mwiimbu said with Justice Mambilima at the helm of the justice system, Zambians had an opportunity to believe and have confidence in the legal system.
“We have concerns raised by members of the public as to happenings in the judiciary of late in particular the last three years under the PF. Mr. Speaker we have noted with concern the impunity that has been obtaining in Zambia.
“We have noted with concern that justice is not seen to be done for certain categories of individuals in this country and we have noted with concern that the biasness pertaining to the administration of justice in the implementation of laws in this county,’ Mr. Mwiimbu said.
He said the last three years of the Patriotic Front Government would go down in history as a period where the judiciary in Zambia has been brutalized by the executive. Mr. Mwiimbu said Zambians were concerned that for the last two years, three constituencies have had no representation in parliament because matters concerning those constituencies were unresolved to date.
Kasenengwa MMD Member of Parliament Victoria Kalima who supported the nomination of Justice Mambilima said she had the capacity and capability to bring the much needed judicial reforms in the country.
