Zesco United have reached the 2015 Samuel Zoom Ndhlovu Charity Shield following a dramatic 5-4 post-match penalties victory over 2014 winners Nkana after the match ended 1-all after full time.
Zesco scored their goal on 15 minutes through Winston Kalengo while Nkana equalized in the 70th minute through substitute Joseph Sitali who scored from a well taken free kick at the top of the area.
Zesco were reduced to 10 men in the second half when defender Bernard Mapili was sent off for a second bookable offence.
Nkana’s Josephat Kasusu had his penalty saved by Jacob Banda while Zesco penalties were converted by Chishimba Changala, David Odiambo, Ayo Oluwafemi, Justine Zulu and Misheck Chaila.
Shadreck Musonda, Donashano Malama, Felix Nyaende and Maybin Chishimba coverted their spot kicks for Nkana.
The result means Zesco will meet Power Dynamos in the final to be played at a yet to be decided venue on March 7.
Zesco United coach George Lwandamina described the victory as good practice for the final.
“It was good practice for us. Nkana gave us a good game; in the second half they pushed so hard but we stood firm. Unfortunately we lost a man but all the same we managed to win.
“The final will be interesting because Power Dynamos have an edge over us. But we will play to show that we are champions,”said Lwandamina
Nkana won the 2014 Charity Shield with a 3 – 1 victory over Red Arrows on February 22.
The Samuel Zoom Ndhlovu Charity Shield marks the start of the Zambian football league 2015 season.
Proceeds are donated by the Republican President to a charity of his choice on behalf of the Zambian football family under the umbrella of FAZ.
