Ex-travel consultant arrested over K146,000

A former travel consultant of Lusaka has been arrested for allegedly obtaining K146, 100.00  by false pretences contrary to the laws of Zambia, the Drug Enforcement Commission (DEC) announced yesterday.

Victor Calvo Mainza, 37, a former travel consultant of Savannah Travel and Tours residing at House No. 64/17 Chawama township in Lusaka, on dates unknown but between 1st June, 2014 and 1st January, 2015 jointly and whilst acting together with other persons unknown did obtain money amounting to K146, 100.00 from six businessmen of Asian origin of Kamwala trading centre.

Mr Mainza allegedly issued them with mere flight bookings which he put in ticket folders and informed them that the flight bookings were genuine air tickets issued by Savannah Travel and Tours when in fact not.

It is alleged that the payments collected for the purported air tickets by the suspect were not remitted to Savannah Travel and Tours but used for his personal gain.

Meanwhile, the commission has in the last three days arrested 50 people countrywide for unlawful cultivation and trafficking in over 1.2 tonnes of psychotropic substances.

Those arrested include Abdulquadir Jama Amir, 20, a Somalian national of Skyways in Ndola for trafficking in 105 bundles of miraa.

The suspect was apprehended from Mpika in Muchinga Province.

In Milenge district, the commission arrested Deswell Kalenga, 22, a peasant farmer of Kalenga village for unlawful cultivation of fresh cannabis plants weighing 530kg, Brighton Mwansa, 35, a peasant farmer of Mwanda village for unlawful cultivation of fresh cannabis plants weighing 370kg and trafficking in loose cannabis weighing 3.5kg.

Also arrested in Luapula Province was Mwaba Mwale, 24, a peasant farmer of Samu village for unlawful cultivation of fresh cannabis plants weighing 320.8kg, Kayeye Patson, 40, of Masumbu village for trafficking in compressed cannabis weighing 31.348kg and Paul Kabo, 39, a fisherman of Chishipula village in Nchelenge district for trafficking in 1.32kg of cannabis seeds.

In Southern Province, the commission arrested Hilary Muteba Nyambe, 32 a Fishmonger of Zambia compound in Mazabuka for trafficking in 130kg of loose cannabis and Isaac Bweluma, 30, of Zambia compund in Mazabuka for trafficking in loose cannabis weighing 12kg.

All suspects would appear in court soon.
