CHIPOLOPOLO Under-17 national soccer team will this evening collide with the young “Super Eagles” of Nigeria in a “sink or swim” 2015 Africa Cup of Nations match in Niger.
Tonight’s match will be the decider of Chipolopolo’s fate at the ongoing AfCON as the team needs an absolute victory if they are to qualify to the semi-finals.
Chipolopolo Boys are currently placed third with three points after they silenced the hosts Niger 2-1 at the Seyni Kountche Stadium on Wednesday, a result which saw the hosts of the championships crash out of the tournament.
Nigeria tops Group A after their 1-1 draw against Guinea on Wednesday and the two teams have four points each after they won their opening games last Sunday.
If the lads fire blanks, Zambia will be eliminated as Nigeria and Guinea progress to the semi-finals.
Meanwhile, Zambia will play without defenders Prosper Chiluya and Edward Chimfwembe who have accumulated two yellow cards each from the two games played so far.
Both players were cautioned in the first game against Guinea on Sunday. On Wednesday they both got their second yellow cards, effectively ruling them out of the match against Nigeria.
But coach Chris Kaunda said on Thursday that he was not worried over the absence of Chimfwembe and Chiluya as the team had enough manpower to handle the void that will be left by the two defenders.
“As I speak to you now, the replacements have already been found and I have no sleepless nights over that issue. We have been through such situations before and we always have a way to come out and conquer,” he said.
Zambia lost their first game 1-0 to Guinea through an own goal.
GROUP A standings:
1. Nigeria – 4
2. Guinea – 4
3. Zambia – 3
4. Niger – 0.
