Teacher fined over college girl’s pregnancy

A local court in Lusaka has ordered a teacher to pay K8, 000 as compensation for impregnating a college student.

Senior Court Magistrate Mubukwanu Matakala sitting with Magistrate Sarah Nyendwa at Chawama Local Court ordered Patrick Chona, 43, of Bauleni compound to compensate Kenneth Sokoshi of Linda compound for impregnating his 23-year-old daughter.
Chona pleaded guilty to the charge. Sokoshi told the court that on February 8, 2015 they sat with Chona and that he charged him K17, 000 adding that after negotiation, the accused agreed to pay K5000.

He explained that he refused the K5000 as it was too little because his daughter was at college.

Sokoshi said he also declined to receive K7000 and commenced the court process.
In defence, Chona said when he was charged K17, 000, he explained that he could not afford because his salary was little.

Chona explained that when Sokoshi refused K5000 he told him that he can only afford K7000. In submission, Sokoshi said he wanted Chona to compensate him adding that his daughter was at college.  Passing judgment, Magistrate Matakala said the compensation Sokoshi demanded from Chona was too high. Chona was ordered to pay K8, 000 with initial payment of K1000 followed by monthly instalments of K500.
