Government has confirmed the suspension of a health worker at Levy Mwanawasa Hospital who is alleged to have selling blood from the Blood Bank, Health Minister Joseph Kasonde confirmed yesterday.
Dr Kasonde said blood scandal at Levy Mwanawasa Hospital was being handled by hospital administration and the State Police.
‘’The investigation is a twofold, we have a government procedure within the civil service and you may want to know that one person has been suspended. The police are also investigating the matter, this is a very serious matter,’’ he said.
Early this week, the Daily Nation exposed a blood selling scandal at Levy Mwanawasa Hospital where blood which was supposed to be administered free to patients in needy was being sold at K400.
Zambia Medical Association (ZMA) called for the immediate arrest of the officers involved.
ZMA president Aaron Mujajati said the act was criminal and must be condemned by all well-meaning Zambians.
‘’It is a criminal act and theft, this commodity is acquired by government at the expense of tax payers and donors. Surely to collect money from patients who are desperate is criminal and immoral. The perpetrators must be arrested and prosecuted,’’ said Dr Mujajati.
Levy Mwanawasa Hospital Medical Superintendent Dr John Kachimba instituted investigations in the matter and described the scandal as unfortunate.
