Consumer protection in Zambia leaves much to be desired – PS

Government says consumer protection throughout Zambia leaves much to be desired as many citizens have been exposed to serious exploitation by greedy businessmen in a hurry to make a quick buck.

Ministry of Commerce Trade and Industry permanent secretary Siazongo Siakalenge said there was therefore need to ensure that all goods entering Zambia were of high quality so that citizens were not exploited.

Mr  Siakalenge has told Millennium Radio News that there were different Government wings supplementing each other’s efforts in ensuring that the consumer was protected from exploitation.

He however observed that consumer protection in Zambia was almost nil as many Zambians were exposed to unwarranted exploitation.

“The different Government wings supplementing each other’s efforts should double up their efforts to ensure that the consumer is protected from exploitation,

“They should make sure that all goods entering Zambia are of high quality so that citizens are not exploited,”he said.

Mr. Siakalenge said  that although sometimes there was a time lag on taking action against people providing counterfeit and sub-standard goods to unsuspecting members of the public, Government was still committed to ensuring that Zambians were not exploited.

“It is true that sometimes it takes long to take action against law breakers, but Government is more than ready to ensure that business houses that are in the habit of importing counterfeit and sub-standard goods for sale to unsuspecting members of the public get punished for their deeds,” he said.
