MMD factions’ skirmishes persist

TWO opposing MMD factions yesterday clashed at the party’s secretariat in Lusaka after the expelled group led by Lusaka Province chairman Wytson Mtonga stormed the party offices demanding that all staff vacate and the offices locked up.

Mr. Mtonga, whose group supported the Patriotic Front presidential candidate Edgar Lungu in the just ended election, arrived at the secretariat around 09:00 hours in the company of a horde of cadres and proceeded to the offices where they found members of staff whom they ordered to leave.

He told the staff that they were still MMD and would continue to enjoy party facilities like any other party official.

“I am a senior member of the MMD. I am part of the national executive committee and at no time have we expelled any member for supporting either UPND or PF. And if Dr. Nevers Mumba has given you instructions not to allow us here, tell him that he is not MMD. We shall not allow individual decisions. His action together with Mwansa Mbulakulima is illegal, they are not backed by the party constitution,” said Mr Mtonga before asking secretariat staff to leave the offices.

Dr. Mumba’s supporters led by Scorpion Kadobi were made to camp outside the offices while the gate to the main entrance was closed.

In an interview, Mr. Kadobi who is MMD Lusaka Province youth chairman, warned Mr. Mtonga not to play with fire.

“Mr. Mtonga was our provincial chairman but he is among the people expelled by NEC and I just want to warn him or rather give him a friendly advice that he should not push his luck too far because by so doing he is playing with fire. We shall deal with him if he continues disrupting party activities at the secretariat,” Mr. Kadobi warned.

He said if Mr. Mtonga and other expelled party officials were aggrieved with the decision by NEC, they should go to court rather than resorting to violence.

Mr. Kadobi said the decision by NEC over the weekend was final and it was in the best interest of the party ahead of the 2016 general elections.

“There is no way we shall allow traitors to be part of the MMD. They betrayed the leadership of president Nevers Mumba by supporting other presidential candidates at the expense of their own party the MMD. It is unfortunate that today after realizing the grave mistake they made, they are now claiming to be members of the MMD,” said Mr. Kadobi.
