Prisoners deserve better diet

THE law on providing a good diet to prisoners in Zambia should be implemented soon because nutrition is a universal right for everyone regardless of their status in society, says Civil Society for Scaling up Nutrition (CSO-SUN) communication director Eneya Phiri
Mr Phiri said prisons were correctional facilities and inmates should not walk out malnourished after being rehabilitated in prisons or finishing their sentences.
Mr Phiri said the right to food and nutrition was a universal human right and denying prisoners that right would be tantamount to taking away their ability to participate fully in the affairs of the country when they were out of prison.
He said high nutritional quality must be more emphasized with prisoners who may be HIV positive.
