HUMAN rights and governance advocate Ngande Mwanajiti has advised losing presidential candidates to respect the will of the people by accepting the results of the January 20 election.
Mr Mwanajiti told Zambia National Broadcasting Corporation (ZNBC) that candidates who will lose the elections should respect the winner because in every contest there would always be one victor.
Meanwhile, Mr Mwanajiti has advised people posting results on the social media to be accurate and responsible and avoid compromising official records of the Electoral Commission of Zambia.
He said it was important for such people to be factual because the country has reached a point where the people are waiting for actual voting results as opposed to figures based on opinion polls.
“As a matter and measure of civic awareness and responsibility, we appeal to all those that have taken it upon themselves to post results on the social media to be accurate and not post controversial, inaccurate and raw or unverified data, which unintentionally compromises official records,” he said.
He said Zambians have impressed the international observers and local monitors for maintaining peace, maturity and unity during the voting period.
Mr Mwanajiti said it was good that there has been no violence since the voting ended because it could impact negatively on the infrastructure development undertaken by Government.
He said good infrastructure was essential in promoting efficient institutions and democracy.
