THE Zambia Table Tennis Association (ZTTA) national junior championships officially kicked off last Saturday marking the beginning of the 2015 calendar.
ZTTA patron Haroon Ghumra said during the tournament that leading junior table tennis star, Choolwe Hamalambo of Ping Pong Stars did not take part in the tournament.
Ghumra said Choolwe opted on his own accord to give the other up coming players an opportunity to excel in the tournament.
During the last season, Hamalambo was in dominating form, winning most of the boys under 18 titles.
Misheck Tembo of old Kabanana defeated Mumba Nsunge of OlympAfrica in an exciting 3 set final,6-1, 1-9, 13-11 to lift the boys under 18 title.
Ghumra commended Oasis Oil Zambia limited for coming on board to sponsor the tournament.
“I am delighted to see several new players taking part. This augurs well for the future of table tennis in the country,” Ghumra said.
In the under-8 boys category Chanda Muma of Olympafrica beat Dismus Mutale of the same team 2-0.11-6,12-10 to emerge the overall winner.
The daylong event contested in six categories was sponsored by the Oasis Oil Zambia limited was held at the Olympic Youth Development Centre (OYDC) in Lusaka. In the Under-12 boys category the winner was Wisdom Nyirenda who beat Happson Munga 2-0,11-7 and 11-6. The final winner under-14 boys championship was Zaninge Karia of Ping Pong Stars who beat Charles Mutambo of the same team 2-0,11-8,14-12.
Olympafrica’s Mishak Tembo emerged the overall winner in the under-18 boys after he beat teammate Mumba Nsunge 2-1,6-11,13-11.
In the under-12 girls category the winner was Janet Mwelwa of Olympafrica club who whacked fellow teammate 2-1,9-11,11-7,11-8.
And in the under 18 girls the winner was Litifa Nalavwe of Ping Pong Stars who also beat her teammate Mubanga Kunda 2-1,11-7,9-11,12-10
