IT is shameful that the Football Association of Zambia (FAZ) has allowed the Chipolopolo’s scheduled trip to Equatorial Guinea for the 2015 Africa Cup of Nations (AfCON) finals to be delayed due to flight complications, football administrator Simataa Simataa has charged.
Simataa told Daily Nation Sports that it was unfortunte that FAZ could allow such a costly mistake.
According to the Confederation of African Football arrival details, the Chipolopolo Boys were expected to arrive today in Malabo before connecting to Ebebiyin where Group B teams will be based.
But this is different from the FAZ and Government’s schedule.
“We hope that the Chipolopolo Boys will not be affected by the delays. The team was supposed to have arrived in Equatorial Guinea yesterday so that the boys can adapt to the environment as soon as possible,” he said.
Simataa said even the players knew that their administrators could not perform to their expectations and urged them to heed Acting President Guy Scott’s advice for them to work extra hard during the AfCON.
And Zambia Sports Fans Association (ZSFA) patron Peter Makembo said FAZ should be held responsible for delaying the team.
Makembo warned FAZ from making such mistakes, adding that whatever went wrong during AfCON would have a bearing on them.
He said the national team should not have been camping in South Africa because it was far from the host nation.
“We advised FAZ and Ministry of Sports to take the Chipolopolo to a country near Equatorial Guinea so that they could easily get into the country but they could not listen to some of us. Even the South African team is not in that country and is in West Africa,” he said.
Makembo said the Chipolopolo Boys were supposed to be in Equatorial Ginuea by yesterday to be part of the official opening ceremony on Saturday.
He said FAZ and the Ministry of Sports should have learnt a lesson from the chaos that characterized the national team’s trip to Cape Verde during the AfCON qualifiers.
