PATRIOTIC Front (PF) president Edgar Lungu possesses the greatest quality of a leader because he has the wisdom to listen, says former republican president Rupiah Banda.
And Mr Lungu has advised party cadres to avoid engaging in acts of violence by responding to provocation from suspected opposition UPND members.
He said that was important because violence had the potential to destroy the good name that Zambia had made to the international community
Mr Banda said the greatest attribute of a leader was one who gave time to listen to others as opposed to the one who claimed to know everything as they would not listen to anyone.
“I am so proud to stand before you Zambian people, and to collaborate with you to vote for Edgar Lungu in next Tuesday’s presidential elections. He has what it takes to be the President of Zambia, and that is the best wisdom any leader can ever have, the wisdom to listen. And that is why I decided to give my support to Edgar Lungu,” he said.
The former head of State was speaking at a PF rally in Kapiri Mposhi where he affirmed his endorsement of the ruling party president as the best candidate in next Tuesday’s presidential election.
Mr Banda said the union between PF and the MMD was done in national interest for the betterment of the people of Zambia so that the nation was not destroyed.
“I was in the campaign race, but it was not for myself, but for the people of Zambia, and now I am here again not for myself, but to stand for the Zambian people. We should not allow anybody to destroy our people, our country with their selfish motives of just getting into power,” he said.
Meanwhile, Mr Lungu has warned the UPND against taking to violence which could backfire on them considering their minority status compared to the ruling party.
The PF president said it was unfortunate the opposition had resorted to illegal activities including physical violence after they burnt a PF speed boat used in campaigns at Crossroads shopping mall in Lusaka, and the beating of occupants and damaging of a vehicle in Monze that displayed a PF chitenge.
“We are not going to react. We cannot react because they (UPND) cannot win even if they become physical. PF is strong in numbers and the fight can be very bad. But we would like to warn them that what they are doing is against the law which will surely visit them.
“We want to win these elections freely without any accusations of intimidation,” he said.
