THE family of late president Levy Mwanawasa has endorsed Patriotic Front (PF) president Edgar Lungu and has vowed to aggressively campaign for him because he (Lungu) has exhibited strong and quality leadership traits that would unite and reconcile the country.
Miriam Mwanawasa, the daughter to the late president Mwanawasa, said the family had decided to back Mr Lungu because of the good relationship between late president Mwanawasa and late president Sata.
Ms Mwanawasa said late president Sata had honoured the Mwanawasa family by protecting his legacy and the name of the family.
She said when late president Sata fell ill in 2008, it took the personal intervention of president Mwanawasa to save the life of the immediate past president by evacuating him from CFB to Milpark Hospital in South Africa for treatment.
Ms Mwanawasa said although Mr Sata and Dr Mwanawasa were political adversaries, their political differences did not degenerate into personal attacks.
She said the family was happy that soon after Mr Sata assumed the presidency in 2011, he moved to honour late president Mwanawasa by naming the Ndola Stadium after Mr Mwanawasa.
Ms Mwanawasa said the family was humbled that president Sata also honoured his late friend by renaming the Lusaka District Hospital, Levy Mwanawasa Hospital adding that the family had decided to accept the honour by ensuring that the legacy of the immediate past president was protected.
“As a family, we wish to inform the nation that we have taken a bold step to support PF president Edgar Lungu in the coming presidential election because of the good relationship the two enjoyed and the honour that president Sata had bestowed on Mwanawasa name and legacy. Zambians will remember that when president Sata fell ill in 2008, it took the personal intervention of president Mwanawasa to save his (Sata) life. Mr Sata was evacuated to Milpark Hospital in South Africa and although the two were political adversaries, this epsode in their lives brought them together,” Ms Mwanawasa said.
Ms Mwanawasa said the family was happy with the development programmes and initiatives by Mr Sata’s administration which had seen the massive economic infrastructure development such as roads, schools and hospitals.
She said the Link Zambia 8000, Pave Zambia as well as the construction of universities and colleges across the country was an indication that President Sata and the PF were genuinely committed to improving the lives of Zambians most of whom were poor and marginalised.
Ms Mwanawasa appealed to Zambians to support and vote for Mr Lungu who the PF had chosen as its leader and who had exhibited commitment to continue with the vision of President Sata.
