UNZA bursaries will be increased, says, Hichilema

Opposition UPND president Hakainde Hichilema has promised to give back the Commonwealth Youth Centre to students at the University of Zambia three days after being sworn into office.

Mr Hichilema, who visted UNZA hotsels on Monday afternoon promised that he would improve student meal and project allowances once he has been voted as republican president.

“When I am elected into office on 20 January 2014, three days later, on 23 January, 2014, I will give back the Commonwealth Youth Centre to students,” he said.

He said   it was UPND’s desire to improve students’ accomodation at the highest learning institution.

Mr Hichilema said it was unfair that students were sleeping eight in one room when during the UNIP era, a single room was occupied by two students.

“Everything that I have with my family, I owe it to this institution. UNZA gave me everything that I have now and it is time to pay back. Our obligation is to make sure that your Busuries are improved ,” he said.

Mr Hichilema added that the UPND government would also work on reducing the meal allowances for students, adding that at the current price, meals were not affordable.

Mr Hichilema said his government would increase student bursaries and bring back all the 400 students who were sent back home by Government due to lack of resources. He said the Patriotic Front ministers who said it was not Government’s responsibilty to educate students were only making noise.

“Chishimba Kambwili has never been a student at UNZA. He does not understand the challenges which students go through,” he said.

Mr Hichilema said because he had been a product of the University of Zambia, he understood the challenges faced by students and promised to work on them once elected into office.
