CHAIRMAN of the Mahtani Group of Companies Rajan Mahtani says he has declined several requests from some political parties asking him to fund their campaigns.
Dr Mahtani, however, said the requests for financial help for campaigns were not presented to him directly.
“I haven’t received any direct approaches, but I have received a number of requests for meetings. All of which I have declined,” said Dr Mahtani.
He also told a press briefing in Lusaka yesterday that following “malicious media reports” by an online publication, Zambia Reports, linking him to a particular political grouping, he had decided to stop interacting with politicians because of the sensitivity of his institution.
“In view of this immature and malicious reporting, I have chosen to preclude myself from meeting any of the politicians or politically exposed persons because of the sensitivity of the institutions of which I have been privileged to serve,” he said.
Dr Mahtani said it was mischievous to allege that he was supporting a particular political camp.
He said politicians should ensure that there was a smooth transition of power following the death of President Michael Sata, adding that it was of utmost importance that elections were held peacefully so that Zambia could return to normalcy.
