It’s January 20

JANUARY 20, 2015 has been set as date for the Presidential by-election following the death of President Michael Sata in London on October 28, Acting President Guy Scott announced yesterday.

Dr. Scott made the announcement at a press briefing in his office at Cabinet Office in Lusaka.

He said in accordance with the Constitution, he was mandated to set the date for the election after the demise of President Sata.

“This is in accordance with Zambia’s Constitution Article 38(1) which provides that if the office of the President becomes vacant by reason of the President’s death, an election to the office of the President shall be held in accordance with Article 34 within 90 days from the date of the office becoming vacant,” Dr Scott’s said.

He also reiterated his gratitude to the people of Zambia for the maturity, love and peace exhibited during the State funeral of the late President Michael Sata.

“It is my prayer that we continue with the same spirit during the campaigns and the Presidential by-election,” said Dr. Scott.

So far, four political parties have confirmed participation in the Presidential election while others are yet to announce their candidates.

The political parties fielding candidates are the Forum for Democracy and Development, Forum for Democratic Alternatives, National Restoration Party and the United Party for National Development.

The Patriotic Front and Movement for Multiparty Democracy are currently embroiled in wrangles on who to field.
