Kariba victims get national mourning

ALL the 25 bodies of pupils, a teacher and PTA chairman who drowned on the Lake Kariba have been retrieved by a team of divers.

And acting President Edgar Lungu has declared Wednesday a day of national mourning in honour of the pupils and two adults who died on the lake.

Police acting spokesperson Esther Katongo confirmed that the last body was retrieved around 17:00 hours.

Meanwhile, police are investigating the death by electrocution of a 19-year-old student in Lusaka’s Emmasdale residential area on Saturday.

Ms Katongo said the deceased Sipho Sibanda was electrocuted as she was hanging clothes on a line at Wazambi Lodge in Emmassdale.

“This incident occurred at Wazambi Lodge off Vubu road on Chimukoko road in Emmassdale. The deceased identified as Sipho Sibanda, a student doing a course in housekeeping was on attachment at the above mentioned Lodge and was electrocuted when she was hanging clothes on the line.

“The body is lying in UTH mortuary and we have instituted investigations into the matter to establish whether this was as a result of negligence on the part of the lodge proprietors,” she said.

Ms Katongo explained that the incident occurred around 15:00 hours on Saturday.
