ZRA scanners detect 67 illegal immigrants

SOME 67 illegal Ethiopian immigrants have been apprehended after being discovered in two containers when the Zambia Revenue Authority (ZRA) was pre-testing its mobile scanners in Kapiri Mposhi on Sunday.

The 67 illegal Ethiopian immigrants were concealed in two containers on a truck registration number T462 AHY.

This brings to 115 the total number of illegal immigrants of Ethiopian origin arrested in less than seven days in the district.

Last week, a combined team of immigration and police officers in the district arrested 48 illegal immigrants in similar circumstances.

ZRA corporate communications manager Mumbuna Kufekisa said in an effort to support and facilitate legitimate trade and optimizing revenue collection, ZRA would not relent in combating vices that were detrimental to the security and well-being of the country and its citizen in line with the laws of Zambia.

He said the ZRA put up a scanner at Kapiri Mposhi in order to curb illegal trade and undervaluing of goods entering the country.

Mr Kufekisa said the authority was committed to seeing to it that government collected all revenue entitled to it.

He said the cases involving these officers were handled by the Internal Audit Department and Internal Affairs Unit of the ZRA.
