THE ruling Patriotic Front (PF) was by last evening leading in three of the five parliamentary by-elections while the MMD and the UPND were also in front in Kasenengwa and Solwezi Central respectively.
PF secretary general Edgar Lungu confirmed to the Daily Nation last evening that the ruling party was leading in Vubwi, Mkushi and Zambezi West constituencies.
Mr Lungu commended all the political parties that participated for conducting violent-free elections stating that it was a sign of maturity and growth in democracy the political contenders could canvass for votes on issues.
“We are leading in Vubwi and there are celebrations there and I have just been talking to my colleague Colonel Panji Kaunda who has confirmed this. We are also leading in Mkushi and I have been informed that we are leading in Zambezi. The results in Zambezi will take long because the ballots have to be airlifted from far-flung areas. Our party has the full national character and we are growing stronger every day,” Mr Lungu said.
The five parliamentary by-elections were characterized by apathy which the MMD attributed to electoral fatigue following numerous by-elections that have been conducted since 2011.
MMD national secretary Muhabi Lungu also confirmed that the former ruling party was far ahead in Kasenengwa while the UPND was leading in Solwezi Central.
