Kitwe’s Chamboli market gutted

Property worth thousands of Kwacha has been destroyed after fire swept through part of Chamboli market in Kitwe.

About 12 makeshift stalls, five of them salons and 7 restaurants were destroyed in the fire that was suspected to have started from a brazier which was left in one of  the restaurants.

Kitwe City Council (KCC) public relations manager Dorothy Sampa said the fire started around 19.00hours and was brought under control within 30 minutes by a combined effort of the council, Mopani Copper Mines (MCM) and Copperbelt Energy Corporation (CEC) fire brigades.

“We had a fire which swept through part of Chamboli market around 1900hours on Sunday and I can confirm that 12 makeshift stalls, five of them salons and seven restaurants were destroyed in the fire which is suspected to have started from a brazier in one of the restaurants,

“The fire started around 19.00hours and was brought under control by the combined effort of the council, MCM and CEC fire brigades. Property was destroyed in the fire,” said Ms Sampa.

She appealed to marketeers to ensure that electrical appliances were switched-off and unplugged, while braziers from restaurants were distinguished. And in another development, one person has died while another has been admitted to Kalulushi Hospital after sustaining body injuries when the earth caved in  on them while carrying out illegal quarrying in  in Kamakonde area.

Mr Green Kapelewa,32, died on the spot while carrying out illegal quarrying while Kaoma Chabala,19, is admitted to Kalulushi Hospital after sustaining body injuries from the same incident.
