We have no problems with paying our worker’s salaries at the council, says Lusaka Deputy Mayor Potipher Tembo.
He said workers at Lusaka City Council have been paid contrary to reports that the council had not been paying workers for over three months.
“There is no problem at the council with regards to salaries of the workers unless with the retirees,” Mr Tembo said.
He however said he could not give statics of the retirees who had not been paid.
Mr Tembo who is also Chawama ward 3 councillor dispelled reports that the council was facing financial challenges hence the delay in paying workers their salaries.
A fortnight ago, then acting Labour Minister Chishimba Kambwili gave the council a 30 day ultimatum in which to pay its workers.
Mr Kambwili’s directive also extended to other councils in the country that had not paid their workers salaries.
He said it was strange that even a small council like Nakonde was unable to settle salary obligations.
“I will not allow people to go and fail to pay salaries, more, especially government institutions. You know my stance on issues of labour and I don’t think I want to be part of a system that is going to fail to pay salaries when they are government institutions,” he said.
