The Forum for Democracy and Development (FDD) has joined calls for President Michael Sata to surrender corrupt ministers to the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) for prosecution.
FDD spokesperson Antonio Mwanza said the revelations by President Sata about some corrupt ministers should be a source of concern to all Zambians.
“We were not shocked about President Sata’s revelations about some ministers receiving corruption money which has now made them forget about the people who voted for them. But what shocked us was the failure by the President to surrender them to ACC for investigations,” he said.
Mr. Mwanza said President Sata should show leadership now in the fight against graft by surrendering the ministers receiving money corruptly rather than making the statement a joke.
“For now the challenge is on President Sata and not those accused of receiving money corruptly. We expect President Sata to act by doing the right thing. He should tell us whether he will allow them to be probed. I am saying this because just a few months ago he indicated that before ACC starts investigations of any PF senior official, Ministers, MPs and other in the PF, he should be informed,” he said.
Mr. Mwanza wondered how allergic President Sata was to corruption if he could keep such serious matters to himself without reporting them to the ACC for further investigation.
“Corruption is not a laughing matter or a joke. It is a serious thing and that is what will eat the greedy PF government. I doubt President Sata’s assertion that he is allergic to corruption because if he was he would have reported the matter long before announcing that there are some ministers in the PF who have received money corruptly. And he did not tell us what he has done with those ministers whom he is still keeping in his cabinet,” he said.
He noted that the corruption talk in the PF was just a camouflage to hoodwink people that the ruling party was committed to the fight against graft and other vices.
“President Sata should explain to the people of Zambia what he has done to those corrupt ministers who have received money corruptly. He owes us an explanation why he is keeping them in government. He needs to tell the people of Zambia why he has been quiet all this long about the corrupt ministers,” Mr Mwanza said.
He said the task of delivering a free corrupt country needed political will from those in leadership, adding that the PF administration lacked the desire to get rid of a corrupt system because it was a product of a corrupt system.
And Mr. Mwanza has urged the Anti-Corruption Commission to commence the investigations of Ministers who are corrupt in the PF government.
“For ACC this should be a plus to expose chaps who are corrupt in PF. The President has opened a door for them to start the long awaited probe on Ministers. What the people of Zambia are now waiting is for ACC to call for a press briefing and inform the nation on who was being investigated and how much was involved and who gave them the money President is talking about,” said Mr. Mwanza.
