PATRIOTIC Front (PF) Luanshya Constituency Member of Parliament (MP) Steve Chungu has sued his Roan Counterpart Chishimba Kambwili for defamation over the ‘car thief’ statement. Chungu has sued Kambwili for defamation for referring to him as a “Car thief” words spoken by Kambwili which were published in the media on January 7, 2014.
According to a statement of claim filed in the Kitwe High Court dated January 20, this year, Chungu as the plaintiff has sued Mr Kambwili as the defendant for allegedly defaming him during a public meeting.
Chungu stated that on January 6 this year, at a gathering in Luanshya, attended by numerous people including Journalists, Mr Kambwili falsely and maliciously defamed him by allegedly referring to him as a ‘car thief’.
“He is just a ka little pompous chap full of himself, a good for nothing former car thief without any relationship with the people, it’s like a rabbit wanting to beat an elephant. He can’t compare himself to my popularity; Mr Kambwili was quoted.
He said in their natural and ordinary meaning the words complained of, meant and were understood to mean that he was a criminal involved in stealing cars.
Chungu said, in the consequences of the words spoken of by the defendant, his personal political and business reputation had been seriously damaged.
He said he had suffered considerable distress and embarrassment and that the words were calculated to disparage his business and political career and his character.
Chungu is seeking damages for slander, compensation and an injunction restraining Mr Kambwili from future reference to him as a former car thief or criminal.
