Acting Deputy Chief Justice Florence Mumba has retired after a long illustrious career and has refused to extend her contract.
Justice Mumba has reportedly written to President Michael Sata informing him of her decision not continue serving as Deputy Chief Justice and that she is expected to leave the judiciary by the end of this month.
What remains unknown however is whether Justice Irene Mambilima would now be allowed to take up her substantive position of Deputy Chief Justice.
For the first time in history, the judiciary has had two Deputy Chief Justices but Justice Mambilima could not perform her functions as she was shunted to the electoral commission.
Speculations were rife yesterday that Justice Mumba had resigned but the judiciary denied the assertions stating she had reached retirement age of 65 years.Justice Mumba will be leaving a seriously divided Bench and legal fraternity.
