Hakainde Hichilema says he forewarned embattled Patriotic Front secretary general Wynter Kabimba that the unruly political party he was building would swallow him.
Speaking after appearing in court, the United Party for National Development (UPND) president described the Patriotic Front’s two years in government as a period of broken promises and collapse of the rule of law
“I warned Kabimba that this monster you are creating called PF will swallow you; and today it is eating him arm by arm, bone by bone. That is what I warned him.
And I have said to many people; President Sata is a dictator but they never believed me-but I think now I am being vindicated that what I have been saying is true.” he said.
And when responding to a question from the Daily Nation on the performance of the PF in terms of upholding the rule of law since they came into power, Hichilema said that the PF had failed to uphold the rule of law and this had resulted in the abuse of the public order Act.
“The issue is that the rule of law has been broken down as you have seen the Public Order Act is completely applied in dual manner. If you are PF then you are above the law this is why you are seeing those militias and hooligans beating each other after they were beating us, I am sure you know what happened in Kasama, you know what happened to church leaders and the students. There is no rule of law under the PF is just hooliganism from the cadres to the top.
On the economic side and human rights, it is clear that the rule of law has collapsed under the PF. Our right to assemble, where we are standing here I can be arrested for talking to you as a media, you know journalists are being searched, arrested and detained including lawyers that are representing us,” he said.
The UPND leader said the PF lied on many things to the people of Zambia during the campaigns in 2011 general elections.
“They traded more money in the pocket and people are poorer now, the disposable incomes of people are lower, the general price level especially for mealie meal in unaffordable to the poor,” he said.
Hichilema said that the PF is spending recklessly on by-election and on judge Chikopa’s tribunal which has produced nothing but wastage of public resources.
The UPND leader has further described as a concoction the argument which the PF peddling during the campaigns that UPND was a tribal party.
“The whole argument was a concoction by the PF to deny the people of Zambia good leadership. I think it is important to ask Kabimba why they concocted that UPND is a tribal party, we won in Kafulafuta and Solwezi Eats, Kafulafuta is on the Copperbelt and Solwezi East is in North Western. So what tribalism is that maybe I need to teach them geography,” Hichilema said.
“As far as I am concerned, we won Mpongwe and we won Kapiri mposhi and we have just decided to serve the people. So the issue of Kabimba is to create a monster and in his case he is unlucky because he is being eaten alive and this is the danger of creating monsters like the PF militias,” Hichilema said.
And Hakainde Hichilema’s case in which he is charged with one count of inciting violence on yesterday failed to take off in the Livingstone Magistrates’ Court due to the non-availability of the lead defence lawyer Jack Mwimbu who is unwell while other lawyers were attending to Dora Siliya and two cases in the Supreme Court.
His bail has been extended.
