Kalindawalo reject govt meddling

The Kalindawalo Royal Family has rejected manoeuvres by the government to change the traditional procedure on the selection and installation of chiefs in Eastern Province stating that the new procedure was an attempt by the government to meddle in traditional affairs.

And the Kalindawalo Mdinkula royal family has written to the government arguing against attempts by the Patriotic Front government to impose the current caretaker chief on the throne and block Everson Mumba from taking over.

In an interview yesterday, Christopher Ukwimi and Kennedy Mumba on behalf of the family revealed that they had written to the government.

The letter, among others, argues against the government’s proposals that District Commissioners join the selection procedure and that Indunas and sub-chiefs choose the chief. The Kalindawalos say in Nsenga culture, females called Mbumba are the ones who choose the successor.

The government has changed the selection and installation procedure of chiefs in Eastern Province and has devised what it has termed ‘four-point standard procedure in the installation of a traditional leader to a vacant throne’, and has removed certain traditional procedures in the process.

The royal family of Mumba has strongly objected to the manoeuvres by the government to involve its officials in the selection and installation of Senior Chief Kalindawalo arguing that the four-point system the government had devised had omitted important steps to follow in the selection and installation of the chief.

The Kalindawalo Royal Family in a letter signed by its spokesperson Collins Tembo charged that it had studied the new procedure the government had proposed in the selection and installation of the chief and were of the view that a few elements had either been left or completely removed.

The Kalindawalo Royal Family wondered why the provincial administration had decided to formulate its own procedures in the selection and installation of chiefs in Eastern Province when there had always been the standard protocol in such procedures.

The Kalindawalo Royal Family said according to the traditional procedures on the selection and installation of chief-designate, the leader of both the Nsenga/Chewa chief who happens to be Senior Chief or Paramount Chief had a role to play in the process.

“We of the Kalindawalo Mndika family notice that a few elements of the procedure have been left out or removed in the whole process. In accordance with the traditional procedures on the selection of the installation of a chief-designate, the leader of both the Nsenga/Chewa chief who happens to be a Senior Chief or Paramount Chief has a role to play in the system. The leader of the whole tribal set-up has to participate at certain stages like setting the dates of royal family meeting,” Tembo said.

The change in the selection and installation of chiefs is contained in a letter addressed to all District Commissioners in Eastern Province and signed by the deputy permanent secretary Zachariah Luhanga.

According to Luhanga, the new procedures in the selection and installation of chiefs in Eastern Province, the points devised by government were necessary to assist district commissioners in the province on matter relating to the selection and installation of chiefs in various chiefdoms in the region.

Sata and nkandu luo are do not hail from eastern province, how can they dictate how chiefs are selected in the eastern province. How much do they know about the succession procedures in the chewa and related tribes in eastern province? Why do these people want to mess up all aspects of Zambian life?

As afar as I know, the Paramount chief Gawa Undi or a senior chief designated by the Gawa is the one with the final authority to sanction a succession. Government agents such as District commissioners etc are observers in the succession meetings. I urge the Gawa to provide leadership before the flock are misdirected by the PF regime.
