Govt hides failed UNWTO from scribes

Daily Nation, Muvi Television and some foreign journalists were yesterday barred from covering the closing ceremony of the UNWTO in Livingstone after reports of dismal tourist inflows filtered through.
The Zambians government has not given reasons why journalists from the Daily Nation, Muvi TV and some foreign reporters were blocked from covering the event but speculation is looming that the government was trying to hide negative statistics of the low number of tourists that visited Zambia as compared to those that dated co-host Zimbabwe. The journalists complained that they were not treated well by the Zambian authorities compared to the way they were treated in Zimbabwe during the official opening of the conference. And as the much talked about UNWTO general conference came to an end yesterday, sources close to the event expressed sadness that despite the huge amount of money spent on the publicity of the event and the minister shifting to the town, Zambia received only 900 visitors while Zimbabwe had 2,500.
