Pressure is mounting on government to release civil rights activist Brebner Changala who has been arrested and charged with drug trafficking a non bail able offence.
The opposition MMD has demanded for the immediate release of the activist and charged that the trickery and the intricacies around the eventual incarceration of Mr Changala was a further confirmation of a failed government.
MMD’s director of communications Muhabi Lungu said the arrest of Mr Changala was an absolute affront to democracy and his rights as a citizen of Zambia.
He warned that the dictatorial behaviour by the PF administration was affecting everyone, adding that every person should be on guard because this government had embarked on silencing those that criticised it.
“This is intimidation of the highest order. They slapped him with drug trafficking in order to silence Changala because of speaking out on behalf of many Zambians. His arrest is political and malicious if the Director of Public Prosecution Mutembo Nchito is involved in it.
“Zambians should not allow this type of politics. This is very frightening and serious development in the political system of the country. Dictators are good at this and all this is happening to the human rights activist is meant to break his spirit,” he said.
And Solwezi Central Member of Parliament Lucky Mulusa has echoed that the state should release Mr Changala and offer an apology.
Mr Mulusa said failure by the state to do so should result in arresting all of them because there was nothing Changala had talked about which Members of Parliament had also not critically spoken about.
“I wish to call on all those selfish individuals within the PF matrix of mis-governance of abuse of state power to reflect upon their activities and search their souls and find out whether the miseries they are subjecting fellow human beings such as Brebner Changala to will still give them personal conviction or satisfaction when they pass on and have an opportunity to look back and reflect on the legacy they will have left behind,” Mulusa said.
Meanwhile, Mr Lungu said this ploy by government was deliberately aimed at intimidating the accused in an effort to shut him up and that the PF was practising Gestapo politics in which it would want to oppress all its critics.
“This is intimidation of the highest order. His arrest is political and malicious if the Director of Public Prosecution Mutembo Nchito is involved in it.
“Zambians should not allow this type of politics. Dictators are good at this and all this is happening to the activist is meant to break his spirit,” he said.
Mr Lungu charged that the ruling party wanted to gag Mr Changala but advised that intimidation was not the way to run the country.
And Mulusa further charged that there was a complete disregard for the noble purposes of security agencies and institutions meant to further the maturity of democracy in Zambia.
He said the level to which important institutions of governance were being abused to satisfy individual person interests were beyond worrying. “To directly use or unleash state machinery in a torturous manner and ensure that you achieve even a night’s incarceration of a well meaning citizen is an indication of the depth of a corrupt and evil mind on the part of those that are behind such evil acts against citizens whose welfare the govt is meant to uplift,” he said.Mr Changala is being held at Kabwata Police Station while his sister is at Woodlands Police Station and he is expected to appear in court today.
