Coach Herve Renard has set the tone ahead of tomorrow’s showdown against perennial rivals Bafana Bafana in the Cosafa 2013 Senior Challenge Cup semi final at Levy Mwanawasa Stadium by urging the fans to turn up enmasse to cheer the team to victory.
And the Chipolopolo Boys have shifted base to Ndola ahead of tomorrow’s mouth watering encounter that kicks off at 20:00 hours in Ndola.
“You know the games against Bafana Bafana are always tough but we have the advantage of playing at home. The fans have been very good to the players and I hope we get a very good turnout at the Levy Mwanawasa Stadium tomorrow, “he said.
He added: “It will be fantastic to play the final at home. It is a big motivation, one year after winning the Africa Cup. It will be good to win another trophy.”
Chipolopolo won the first two editions of the 16-year old regional competition. They were successful again in 2006, but the closest they came to glory since then was collecting silver medals twice.
Although Renard has chosen an experimental squad, his side is favoured to lift the trophy.
And he accepts the pressure is on him and his team as they try and put a miserable year for the national team.
“Every Zambian believes we will win the Cosafa Cup this year, especially as we are hosting the tournament,” said Renard.
“This means there is only one path for us to follow, the one that leads to the winners’ podium in Ndola on Saturday.”Renard became a national hero last year when his team emerged as shock winners of the 2012 Africa Cup of Nations.
Renard said his local charges had gelled well and would aim at reaching the final.
“It was a big question mark before this tournament because we started this team three months ago but now we are ready,” he said. Our prospects in the CHAN qualifiers are looking very good.” Renard said.
Meanwhile the Chipolopolo Boys returned to training yesterday afternoon at the Levy Mwanawasa Annex pitch.
The team that has now shifted to their traditional base in Ndola is shaping up for South Africa after they downed Mozambique on Sunday 3-1 in a quarter final clash.
Goals from Bonwell Mwape, Jimmy Chisenga and Moses Phiri earned the Chipolopolo a place in the semi finals against South Africa.
Bafana Bafana beat Zambia 1-0 in the 2008 final of the same competition.
